Amrita University named India’s top private university by international ranking system

London, England

Amma received a certificate from Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), which named Amrita University the number one private institution in India. Duncan Ross, who is the Chief Data Officer with THE, presented the award in London.

“It gives me great pleasure to be able to present this certificate because Amrita University is truly an excellent institution and one of the leading universities in the world,” said Ross.

“What impresses me most about Amrita University under Chancellor Amma’s leadership is the very different way they approach knowledge and learning. They not only say follow us, come to us, but say we will walk with you and work together to bring that knowledge and learning into communities around the world.”

THE also slotted Amrita’s Health Sciences Campus in Kochi, Kerala among the top 300 in the world for clinical, preclinical and health studies.

In addition, this year’s rankings include a pioneering initiative to recognize universities for their achievements in the social and economic spheres. Called THE University Impact Rankings, Amrita is again among the top 300 in the world. The award was based upon the work of Live-in-Labs, which organizes student internships in villages across India, and AmritaSREE, our self-help groups initiative to assist women in India gain economic independence.

Amma’s concept of education, emphasis on research, and commitment to instilling universal values have come together to shape Amrita. It is a university where the latest advancements and discoveries combine with compassion and service to the world. This open-minded thinking has lead to innovative research in an array of fields from engineering to learning technologies to business management.

“It is Amma’s prayer that we develop the expansive-mindedness to embrace both scientific knowledge and spiritual wisdom,” says Amma.

“We can no longer afford to see these two streams of knowledge as flowing in opposite directions. In truth, they complement one another. If we merge these streams, we will find that we are able to create a mighty river - a river whose waters can remove suffering and spread life to all of humanity.”

More than 20,000 students attend Amrita’s six campuses across South India. The numbers are divided almost equally between men and women, and the students arrive from across India and around the globe. Students also participate in extra-curricular programs to expand their vision of the world.

THE World University Rankings 2020 includes more than 1,400 universities across 92 countries, standing as the largest and most diverse university rankings ever. Their system measures an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

THE’s ranking of Amrita states, “Research is a significant part of Amrita’s output and it is a partner in various international bilateral governmental research programmes and initiatives. It has links with 20 US universities for research into areas such as cyber security and further associations with European and Japanese institutions.”

The Government of India has selected Amrita as an Institution of Eminence, which recognizes it as a world-class university that puts India on the global education map. Its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) also ranks Amrita as India’s best private institution and the country’s eighth best university overall.
