Finding hidden talents in people with intellectual disabilities

Kochi and Kozhikode, Kerala

The Amrita Institute for Differently Abled is dedicated to providing education to children with intellectual disabilities. This includes people with Down’s Syndrome, epilepsy, autism and developmental issues. The therapy is based on education for daily life skills so that as adults, the students will be able to function as independently as possible.

The institute’s teachers have focused on fostering many different outlets for creative expression by the children. The students spend time making crafts such as beaded bracelets, decorated bottles, and paper-wrapped pens. Ultimately, the school's activities have illumined the bigger picture that everyone and everything has a place in our world that can contribute to a better future for all.
